Letter to Chatham Daily News

Why are the disabled citizens of Ontario being driven into deeper poverty by the McGuinty Government? Most disabled people in the Province of Ontario receive their only source of income to live on, from the Provincially funded Ontario Disability Support Program. A disabled single adult recipient on ODSP only receives a meager $959.00 a month to pay ALL monthly expenses which usually includes rent, heat, hydro, food, clothing, telephone, bus fare, hair cuts, essential grooming products, and all other necessities of life. With the average rent being around $750 a month, plus utilities, the pittance the Ontario Government currently provides, DOES NOT allow a person enough money left over to even think about eating healthy, nutritious food. Disabled people are often forced to resort to food banks to obtain ANY food to eat, since they certainly cannot afford adequate groceries, let alone healthy food. However, so many people require food bank assistance, that often the food banks are overwhelmed by the demand, and often, quantities of food available from food banks is inadequate to meet the need. Disabled people in Ontario went without a disability pension increase for over ten years! When the Provincial Government, led by Dalton McGuinty FINALLY did grudgingly decide to provide an increase for disabled people, it was a miniscule three per cent increase! This paltry increase barely covers the cost of living increase for a one year period, let alone ten years!

Many people who are receiving a Disability pension have very severe medical problems and often require additional Provincial funds to obtain a doctor ordered, and medically necessary diet to meet their health needs. The Ontario Disability Support Program until recently, had an adequate special diet allowance in place, by which an individual could receive up to an additional $250.00 per month. On November 4, 2005, the special diet policies were drastically and negatively changed. These changes essentially impoverish the disabled even more, due to the deep cuts the Ontario Government has made in the special diet allowance. There are many disabled individuals who are no longer going to be able to receive their medically required special diets, due to the de listing of many diets that were previously covered by the Government of Ontario.

People DO NOT choose to be disabled, and if they could work, they would welcome that opportunity. The large majority of people on a disability pension CANNOT work, and therefore rely ENTIRELY on the Provincial Government to supply their essentials of life! When a person is medically unable to work, they should at least be provided with an adequate amount of funds to meet their essential, everyday needs. With the grossly inhumane, and inadequate funds currently being administered to the disabled people of Ontario, and the ever escalating costs of EVERYTHING, it is clear that many disabled people are going to end up in the hospital because of diet related medical problems, or end up on the streets, with nowhere to live. This is because it is now often a choice between buying food, or starving and having some place to live.

I want the public to know just how inadequately, and neglectfully, disabled people are being taken care of by Dalton McGuinty and the Liberal Government of Ontario. I want the public to have at least some idea of what disabled people are up against. It is deplorable to think that people who are medically suffering everyday, are being subjected to an ever worsening situation because of Premier Dalton McGuinty, his Ministers and other beaurocrats, who disregard, and could care less, about the plight, health or safety of disabled people, and who callously enact changes to the Disability legislation without thought or concern to the human suffering or damage their actions (or inactions) will cause.

Debra St. Onge

An open letter to Premier Dalton McGuinty.

The contact page on the Premier of Ontario's Web Site (http://www.premier.gov.on.ca/english/contact/) says that all emails will be read ... but not by whom. If I now spend at least 1 hr. writing a message and not have Mr. McGuinty read it will it be a waste of my time?

Point 1: Are you ever going to give up lying and make good your election promises? I believe you should. Do you think you will have any chance of re-election when the Liberal Government falls (in the not too distant future)? I do not think so. The truth shall set you free Mr. McGuinty!

Point 2: I am one of the over 240,000 ODSP recipients in our Province who ekes out a monthly 'eat or pay rent' dilemma as I cannot afford to do both. I am tired of hearing about the fantastic 3% raise we were blessed with this year. I, and thousands like me, must have a very long ladder to climb up to the poverty level. The Ontario needs a raise seems to have little or no effect on you or your office. This poverty needs to end here ... today. Raise the rates Mr. Premier now! So now Ms. Pupatello seems to think ODSP recipients do not need to eat at all. Our special diet allowance is being taken away from us. Does anyone in your Government know what ODSP stands for? DISABLED.

Do you people think our disability is of our own making? Do you think anyone on ODSP likes it? Have you ever had to choose between food and rent? I beg of you, please do NOT take away our only source of food. We are already ill. Do you not understand what this will do to Gov. spending in the not-so-far future when Malnutrition sets in, disabled persons finding themselves homeless on the streets because they use rent monies for a bite of food. Crime will rise as a result of desperate people doing desperate things just to survive. Not to mention suicides! Does the name and death of Kimberly Rogers ring a bell with you? Lest we forget what happened to her. That was one, how many more lives will you put at risk? Ms. Pupatello is on record via radio interviews stating that 'you are only tying up a loophole in the system' This is no loophole; its a dire necessity to all who are on ODSP to receive this allowance.

Point 3: I used to admire the Government of Canada many years ago. Now that I am an activist I see how self-serving it really is. Do you personally feel that you are doing a great job for the people that voted you into office? How can you sleep at night while those lies and broken promises play havoc in your head. Or, do you sleep like a baby with no regard to the damage you have done to the great citizens on Ontario? The biggest violators of Human Rights are Governments. It does not matter whether it is an Anarchy, Dictatorship or as we have found out, a Democracy. My human Rights have been abolished to the point of being hungry in Canada. I do not live in Ethiopia, or parts of Africa, or any THIRD WORLD COUNTRY; BUT I am hungry, I do live in poverty. I am not allowed to participate in community programs (As the Human Rights Commission says I should be able to) just because I am disAbled and I cannot afford to be part of my community. And whom do I blame for this atrocity? MY GOVERNMENT that's who!!

Point 4: Being an Activist for ODSP recipients I have a web site to which I implore you to visit.
http://odsp.magmac.ca
It may open your eyes to what is really happening with the disAbled in your Province. Along with the website My Husband and I have established a new Alliance of ODSP recipients whose goal is to build awareness of Ontarians to the way ODSP recipients are being treated by your Government. The official title is ODSP Recipient's Alliance Group, RAG's for short. You will be hearing a lot about us in the coming months as we rally to be heard and make changes that are desperately needed in the ODSP system.

WE ARE CANADIAN...............HEAR US ROAR ! ! !
